Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is for anyone who experiences stress in their lives and would like to manage it better. MBSR is an effective, scientifically researched method for:
reducing physical suffering
reducing psychological suffering
building resilience
finding balance
developing peace of mind
Learning to practice mindfulness provides a way of relating directly with whatever is happening in your life, a way of taking charge of your life, of noticing and responding to your own stress and pain, and to the challenges and demands of living. This starts with paying attention to what is happening right here and right now with kindness and curiosity.
MBSR was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 and is based on ancient contemplative practices integrated with western medical approaches. MBSR is a nonreligious, scientifically researched approach that is in harmony with any faith-based tradition.
Most of each class is devoted to experiential learning. Various mindfulness practices are introduced and developed throughout the 8 week class, including:
sitting meditation
developing an anchor
walking meditation
gentle movement
body awareness
home practice recordings
In addition, we will explore perception, the power of being present, patterns of automatic stress reactivity, mindfulness mediated stress response, mindfulness and communication, and bringing mindfulness to our everyday life.
There is an orientation and information session the week before class starts. MBSR classes meet once per week for 2 1/2 hours for a total of 8 weeks. In addition, there is an all day retreat that lasts about 7 hours. Recordings are provided for home practice.
